My dad called me last night waking me from deep slumber, reassuring me he was okay. Hearing those words I was immediately completely awake.
There was a hit-and-run in front of the tavern in the town I used to call home. A small town where you know someones nickname and cannot remember their given name. A town of 200 where you leave your doors unlocked and kids can play outside unattended.
My dad was talking to W. W had to smoke. So W went outside, joining others. My dad stayed inside.
Moments later the bartender was screaming for the cops.
There was no sound of brakes or screeching of tires as a car hit 3 people.
3 people hit. 2 people were injured, one of them being thrown half a block. And another was dead. W. Dead. He was just talking to my dad.
And the driver of the car did not stop.
For the remainder of the night and into the wee hours of this morning, all I could think of was the little girl that W left behind. A beautiful little girl, younger than my own, with Downs Syndrome. A little girl who may not remember her father.
And the car did not stop.

omg! That is so terribly sad!!
I'm feeling incredibly bad for all that this horrendous accident will affect. Thankfully your dad is ok and wasn't involved, as you've got enough on your plate with what your mother is going through. My thoughts go out to W and his family and baby girl.
This is just awful. I feel for the family that is left behind to grieve for their loss. Words cannot express my deepest sympathy for the family.
I heard about this. Very sad. Thank god you dad is fine. But we will keep his family in our thoughts.
I am so sorry to hear this. I am thankful that your dad is fine and sad for the loss of someone you know. His family is in my prayers.
Oh that's so sad! I'm so sorry for your dad's friend and for the little girl!
My prayers are with their families.
Oh no...
There's a special place in hell reserved for db's like that.
Holy shit!!!!
That is horrible and I hope they catch the SOB that did this!
Oh how sad! I hope they catch whoever did it. Thank goodness your dad is ok.
My Mom lives in the little town you used to call home and she told me about what happened. I will have W's family in my prayers.
Oh my god. How? How could someone do that? While I'm happy to hear that your dad is ok, it breaks my heart to know someone lost their life...
